With over $165 billion in total value locked, it behaves less like a protocol and more like a utility—a ghost in the machine that underpins nearly every DeFi application from Aave to Curve. Its stETH token has become the de facto yield-bearing dollar for an entire ecosystem. But dominance breeds inertia, and inertia breeds decay. The upgrade, a shift from its original validator module (Module v1) to a new architecture called CMv2, is a response to that decay: 34 selected node operators agreed to lock ETH as collateral, reducing the total validator set by roughly one-third. The goal? To ease the load on Ethereum’s consensus layer, where every epoch brings a flood of attestation messages from Lido’s sprawling network. Technically, CMv2 transforms operator selection from a reputation-based system to one where capital is the first line of defense.
